Our Artist Jim Sheffield Spotlighted in Leesburg Leisure Magazine

Thank you so much Melinda Gipson for the beautiful article you wrote about me and one of my talented senior artists, Jim Sheffield, in the July issue of Leesburg Lifestyle! (pg.50) https://citylifestyle.com/washington-dc/articles/arts-and-culture/jim-sheffield-testifies-how-art-together-enriches-his-life

Inspirational Artist: Jim Sheffield

It is my great joy to share with you Jim’s beautiful journey of self-discovery during the pandemic. Now in his 80s, Jim has discovered a talent he never knew he had, and is enjoying the happiness and peace of mind it brings him as well as sharing it with others. I like to think of him as a “Grandpa Moses” since he definitely has a lot in common with the infamous Grandma Moses who took up painting around the same age and ended up becoming world famous. Jim is painting daily and selling his work to a very supportive audience too. Who knows, this video might help him be an inspiration to others too! 🙂 Enjoy.

Inspirational Artist: Kelly Hennessa

Being able to overcome life’s challenges through art is a gift not only to the person making the art but also to those who have been inspired and blessed because of it. In this short video, I interview, artist Kelly Hennessa about how art has helped her to overcome the many challenges resulting from her tragic car accident. Hear how Kelly describes how tapping into her creativity and learning how to paint have been invaluable to her healing, and her ability to be an encouragement to others through her hand-painted cards. Thank you for taking to the time to watch this video. And thank you Kelly for allowing me to share your inspiring story!

Two Families Use Facebook Fundraisers to Support Art Classes at Nursing Home

In the fall of 2019, two families asked if they could each do a Facebook fundraiser to help underwrite my programs so more residents at the nursing home could continue to paint after our summer grant from Dementia Society of America had run out. You can imagine my joy – and that of the residents who got to keep painting!

Here are just a few of the happy faces and beautiful paintings which resulted from over $2,000 of kindness and generosity! I’m so thankful for all who have allowed me to take pictures so that I can share their joy and mine with you.

A huge thank you to the Preletz and Long families, and all those who supported their fundraisers for our senior artists!

Daughters Open Doors to Creativity for Others

Since the summer of 2017, the daughters of one of our former clients have been sponsoring other nursing home residents to participate in our creative aging programs through a scholarship in their mom’s honor and memory. We are so very grateful, as are the many seniors who’ve painted because of their generosity!

“Our mother, Marion McAboy, had the rewarding experience of painting for the first time due to the generous gift of a late patient and his family. The fact that Mom had dementia and a stroke did not stand in her way of enjoying this creative activity.

After seeing how much our mother enjoyed her experience, we wanted it to continue. It proved to us to be a beneficial and needed therapeutic experience for both patient and family.  Mom used to tell us as kids that embracing the unknown of new experiences can be challenging but exciting, like an adventure.

Thus, in memory of our Mom, it is our honor and privilege to establish ‘Marion’s Adventures.’ This is a monthly gift for other patients to enjoy an opportunity to enjoy a fun and rewarding creative experience and thereby allowing them as well as us to share in Mom’s fulfilling adventure.”

Our clients’ art helps support mission of Alzheimer’s Association

Greenfield Senior Living of Berryville, VA in partnership with Art Together recently hosted a silent art auction with all proceeds to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

The artwork was created by the residents who have participated in our programs over the past two years. Thanks to the generous donations of more than 25 paintings by residents and their families, and the generous donations by attendees, the event was able to raise $930 in just 90 minutes! Wow!!

Here’s to the gift of the arts in our lives….and the blessings and healing they can bring to others!
